Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer give outstanding performances as Monsr. Hugh O’Flaherty(Peck) and SS Col. Herbert Kapler(Plummer) . The action and suspense of the movie keeps it going at a brisk stir. The account follows Peck as a Vatican official trying to set Italian Jews and Allied escaped POW’s from the hands of the German SS. Plummers portrayal as Col. Kapler is both chilling and frightful, especially when he personally executes a Catholic priest who was caught helping the Resistance. Peck’s portrayal of Father O’Flaherty is very bewitching to peek. The intelligence and compassion of this man truly shows through and shows how mighty Father O’Flaherty deserved the awards and decorations he received from the Allies after the war. And the ending is very surprising as well! It is also a plus having the movie shot in Rome where the accurate events took status. A truly classic movie. I highly recommend it.
This movie never gets enough credit! This is one of the best war time movies ever and with Mr. Peck’s passing this is a must contemplate for Peck fans who have not seen this movie. Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer in one of his best roles play a cat and mouse game during WW2. The acting is fabulous and there is a lot of suspense! A must watch!

Alan Pakula brings the Styron unusual to the camouflage with period-perfection, and he has in his court a trio of grand performances, lead, of course, by Meryl Streep, who finally won me over with her transformation into Sophie. The character is layered and rich with emotional baggage, and Meryl’s performances is nothing short of transcendental. When I saw this movie in the theatre upon its release, there was an older woman in the audience, towards the front, who ran screaming from the theatre, her hands on her ears, during the gut-twisting “choice” sequence. Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol, who do battle over Sophie, and within their beget hearts, are exceptional foils for Sophie, and each brings a resonance to the evocative Brooklyn locations. The European sequences, swathed in a sepia tone, are mesmerizing and horrific. Sophie’s travel is also a mystery, and it unravels with devastating results. Marvin Hamlish designed the lush musical obtain, which continues to rip my heart begin every time I play it. While Schindler’s List is a more expansive vision of the experience of the Holocaust, this movie is intensely personal, but does perhaps more to drive a stake through your heart. You will continue to wonder, long after the haunting images of Sophie’s face depart from notion, what might you have done in her shoes?
Caught forever in an existential moment, Meryl Streep’s portrayal of the aftereffects of Auschwitz is transfixing. Sophie is the guilt-ridden survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, and Streep’s distinguished work brings her leaping off the shroud into the hearts and minds of the watcher. This is a complex film which plays the outer tragedy of Sophie’s expose life against the inner tragedy of the sinful she faced during the war.
As the anecdote of Sophie’s devastating past unfolds in flashbacks Streep faces choice after choice in her exhibit life. Each seems to eat away at her life. Peter MacNicol and Kevin Kline unite to give performances that that carefully balance Streep’s, creating an intense overall achieve that cannot be described easily,
The film’s emotional and intelligent mutter create is a bit too lengthy and stagy, but the lulls place the stage for the emotional crises. This is a heart rending tale that will not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Streep well deserves the Academy Award she got for this film, which was also nominated for best screenplay and best cinematography.

The neutral waters off Goa, a Portuguese colony in India, is the setting for this unique but legal war myth. And what’s more original are the heroes of this unsafe mission.
It is 1943, and German merchant ships are relaying information to U-boats as to the whereabouts of Allied war vessels. The German merchants being in waters considered neutral are all but impossible to close. Two officers(Gregory Peck/Roger Moore) of a novel British Military organazation, are assigned to the task of putting an raze to these deadly exploits. They turn to a group of seniors who are veterans but haven’t seen action in over 40 years. These guys expend most of their time trying to end on their Polo ponies at their shrimp country club. They are “The Calcutta Light Horse”. Most would give their moral arms to gape action again, and now they will have their chance…Their mission..to board the German Vessels and waste them!

Led by one of their fill(David Niven),they jump at the chance to encourage the war wretchedness, and head fearlessly into effort, and face tense situations with bravery and humor and become heroes once again. The “Sea Wolves” is huge war legend, that is based on genuine events, and will have you smiling and rooting for the obliging guys all the device through. And of course with Moore alive to,you know there will be some romance as well!
You can’t go detestable with this cast, who only fetch better and better with age. Also included are Patrick MacNee and Trevor Howard. It was directed by Andrew McLaglen and based on the book “Boarding Party” by James Leasor. It was beautifully filmed on place in India.
Warner Bros. has made a nice transfer to the DVD. The describe is sure and curious and may be viewed in Widescreen, or a Standard format. The colors are trustworthy, the ocean sparkles as does Peck’s smile. The stereo surround sound is very suitable, although the dialouge is a slight crude at times, but certain and distinguishable for the most piece. There are no Special features, but may be viewed with English or French subtitles.
Spend some time with these tidy Gents, you’ll have fun doing it…..Laurie

Gregory Peck, Roger Moore and David Niven are the lead actors in this legal narrative having taken position in WW II in India and Goa. It is shot on situation where it happened, giving tall authenicity to the scenes and how they took space. I consider honest about every older English actor who has appeared in any war films is note here. This was one of the reasons I liked the film. A gathering of “musty” friends in one spot from the other films gives it credence as you know they are well trained, in a map. This is sort of like “The Wild Geese”, same cast of characters in the succor roles. The print of the film in 1.85 to 1 letterbox is of immense quality. The surround sound works well. While the subject matter of getting the sinking of ships stopped is serious, there are many very humorous spots as the older men of the Light Horse bag geared up for war after 40 some years. There is one especially tender moment when David Niven is shaving at 5am and his wife is skittish about another woman. Both Gregory Peck and Roger Moore play their respective characters believably. Not distinct why they didn’t check one character out…………

I am writing this review as a caucasian-american who has never seen a Bollywood movie before, but always wanted to. One of my co-workers went to India recently, and bought this movie while he was over there and brought it benefit to me.

I can’t justify what type of affect this movie had on me, but I can now say that I am a current fan of Bollywood. The main storyline was somewhat predictable, and perhaps in a typical American made movie, it could have advance across as “cheesy”. But the draw this movie was woven together; slowly, delicately, with many different layers and subplots blew me out of the water completely.
It may not be the best Indian film ever made, and according to some reviews there are many better films, but it certainly was very entertaining, and touching.

I deem what I appreciated most about the film was Naina’s and Aman’s cherish for each other. They certainly felt it, and talked about it to others, yet they never straight out told each other “I fancy you!” (With the exception of Aman pretending to “read” from Rohit’s diary when he was really speaking to her, or when Naina asked “how can you admire me so considerable? ” as she weeped in his arms towards the raze. I liked that because it made the unspoken understandable between the two of them.
The other tale I enjoyed is the family woes and how they deal with them. The mother (Actress Jaya) acts flawlessly as a woman struggling with the suicide of her husband, trying to acquire her family together, and holding befriend dusky secrets of her past. Her solemness and lonliness fair expressed in her eyes says it all, and the draw Aman wants to bring her some light in her life was very touching.
The songs were expansive fun, and the acting ranged from dramatic to comedic. The actors/actresses are very delicate, and the different legend lines all flowed together so well, but not to a point of confusion. It was weasy to follow, even by reading the subtitles (which I must do, since I don’t order Hindi) .
This is definetely a astonishing movie, and deserves all the praise it receives. Whether you thunder Hindi, or English or any other language (provided that there are subtitles for one to understand), watch this movie!!! I am convinced you will be unbiased as touched and moved as I was.
This movie is simply exquisite. It is a anecdote of care for and sacrifice and friendship and all that is respectable in us.
In an age where there are so many movies coming out of Hollywood that glorify our baser instincts, it is fantastic to explore a movie like this that celebrates what we can be is we simply resolve to be obedient, kind people. It is ironic that a film that celebrates what Christians would call ‘traditional values’ should near out of Bollywood.
I cannot give away the situation, but I want to say that SRK really brought his best to this film. If you can notice this film without tears, you have no soul.
There is one minor spot with the DVD itself. The subtitles are about 3-5 seconds leisurely. Otherwise, this is a perfect movie.

Memento Streaming.
Movie Title: Memento Memento is available for streaming or downloading. |
Brilliantly directed by Christopher Nolan, who also wrote the screenplay based on a short story by his brother, Jonathan Nolan, this film had to be a huge challenge for all. The word “memento” means “remember” in Latin, and the story is about Leonard, so traumatized by a blow to the head after his wife’s rape and murder, that he has lost his short-term memory. He’s out for revenge and is looking for the killer, but, although he remembers his life with his wife and who he is, he cannot remember anything that has happened since. He therefore takes Polaroid shots of everyone he meets and writes notes on them. And he also tattoos things he wants to remember all over his body. The role calls out for an exceptional actor and Guy Pearce certainly does rise to the occasion. I found myself drawn to him, identifying with his condition, and joining him in his struggle to relate to the world.
The story unfolds backwards, an unusual narrative technique that is tricky to use. We see a scene and think we understand. And then there is another scene that has happened prior to it, and it totally changes our perception of what is going on. Purposely, it is confusing. And purposely, there are moments of clarity where it all fits together only to become even more confusing in the next scene. Carrie Ann Moss plays a femme fatal and, as we get to know her, we are not quite sure what her motives are. Joe Pantolino is cast as in the role of Leonard’s buddy, and we are constantly confused as to whether he is friend or foe.
I sat there fascinated as this complicated plot unfolded, enjoying the mastery in which the director led me down different avenues of thought and also introduced questions about the moral issues involved. By the end, I was absolutely sure of nothing at all, except that I had been traveling on a roller coaster of an experience that didn’t have any easy answers. While I tend to want films to have a beginning, middle and end, and a story line that is easy to follow, this an exception to the rule. I definitely recommend to those who are willing to explore this unique film, which is certainly one of a kind.
The only film that I can think of that comes even close to the ingenuity of Memento is The Usual Suspects. Like that way underappreciated classic, Memento gives you the ending immediately, and then spends the rest of its time showing you how it got there. Each scene offers clues and various revelations–Leonard’s tattoos, why he writes what he does on Natalie’s and Teddy’s pictures, what happened to his wife, Leonard’s job before “the incident”–each of which are thrilling mini-narratives in themselves.
The acting is first rate. Guy Pearce, best known as “the one who wasn’t Russell Crowe in L.A. Confidential”, is Leonard, a character who will intrigue you, engage your sympathy, and might even scare you by the end. Joe Pantoliano’s Teddy will have you debating his intentions towards Leonard for days afterwards. The real acting coup, however, is fellow Matrix alum Carrie Anne Moss–her performace as Natalie will make you love her, hate her, and make you fiercely protective of her.
The movie can only be watched on DVD. Keep the remote handy as you’ll want to pause every now and then, if only to read Leonard’s tattoos for various clues. After watching the movie, be sure to check out Otnemem in the Special Features section for newspaper articles, pictures, journal entries, and psychiatric reports on Mementos intriguing characters. They will help confirm what you think happened in the movie. DVD also offers the playful option of choosing to watch the movie backwards (or would it be watching the movie forward?). You will definitely consider the option after watching the movie. I haven’t done it yet, but I can’t wait to see the effect that it has on the movie.
This movie is worth the critical hype. If you enjoyed movies like The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, The Usual Suspects, Seven, Fight Club, and Dark City (some of my personal faves), then Memento will be the crown of your DVD collection!

There can’t be powerful hiss about the quality of this work. The staging, the singing, the technical brilliance of the hidef experience both visually and aurally are impeccable. As the review above eminent, no magic is fervent in this rendering of the Cinderella fable. Everything is worked out through the wisdom of Alidoro, the Prince’s ragged memoir counselor (sung brilliantly and with all due gravitas by Nathan Berg) . This makes it a comedy well within the human domain. The correct lessons are clear: vanity is illusive and will not succor us well, all of us must treat each other with kindness, virtue is rewarded, and forgiveness and care for heal all.
The characters are beautifully played and sung. Angelina (la cenerentola herself–Cinderella-sung by Ruxandra Donose) appropriately plays a somewhat withdrawn role at first but grows in vocal power and confidence throughout the opera . She emerges at the destroy as a incandescent beauty of gleaming speak. The “rank” stepsisters, Clorinda and Tisbe (Raquela Sheeran and Lucia Cirillo) are presented as very distinguishable comedic personalities whose voices often combine in bell-like harmonies. Don Magnifico, the base stepfather, is played to stout comedic achieve (Luciano Di Pasquale) as a buffoon who is cruel, worried, and self-delusive at the same time. His is a gem of a performance. (It is with this that we peruse one of the drawbacks of such high visual resolution: one can easily peek where the scalp conceal is joined to his temples. But then again, the characters and sets seem almost three-dimensional, so it is a distinct plus) . The Prince, Don Ramiro, (Maxim Mironov) is carefully constructed as a major character who must be less prominent than Cinderella herself, so he is a Rossini tenor, somewhere between tenor and counter-tenor. He is young, attractive, recognizes virtue and responds to it honorably, and sings well. Yet it is the other characters who dominate, including Dandini,(Simone Alberghini) the valet the Prince has commissioned to play him while the Prince stays in the background to notice the reactions of the stepdaughters and anyone else hoping to be his bride.

Certainly this production shows off the glories of high definition BluRay, but it is the quality of the performances that should really sell this version to the public. For opera lovers, this Opus Arte presentation of the Glyndebourne production (almost always high quality from Glyndebourne and Opus Arte) is truly a must. It is not possible not to revel in this 3-hour delight. Do yourself a favor and salvage it; you’ll savor it.
For several years I have owned the DVD release of this performance. Fair before the Blu-Ray copy arrived, I watched the whole DVD copy all the procedure through and was impressed by the high musicality and great staging. The Prince stood out as a Rossinian singer of high excellence, who would be a credit to any stage.
After the Blu-Ray arrived I compared the two masterings with an glance to detail.
Visually, the Blu-Ray stands hand over fist above the DVD. Even with upscaling the DVD is fuzzy, and Jurowski comes across as a stern, calm figure at the podium. With the extra clarity of the Blu-Ray report, the maestro’s exiguous facial expressions explain that he conducts by his charm as powerful as by his hand gestures. He possesses an inner belief of the humanity of this portion of music, and exudes it during the overture. That revelation alone is worth the designate of the Blu-Ray disc.
Sonically, the Blu-Ray is a careful remix and clean-up of the new tapes. On the DVD, two chairs can be heard to squeak on the floor a split second before Jurowski lowers his baton. Those distractions are gone on the Blu-Ray track. There is also better attention to volume level: the DTS track on the DVD becomes very harsh in the upper levels during the ensemble work, but everything balances nicely on the Blu-Ray.
I enjoyed the DVD very grand but that was no reason to turn into a pumpkin: fetch the Blu-Ray.

No issue with the transfer per se since it is a digital cartoon this edition appears to be from the same source as the previous edition. Should you upgrade? Not if you have the previous two disc edition but if you have the single disc edition and you want the extras, this is the way to go. Sound is crystal clear with nice use of 5.1 effects.
The DVD ROM printables and “Scrat’s Frozen Fun Facts” an interactive feature that can be accessed during the film appear to be the newest features on this set. The latter has behind-the-scenes clips you the film in various stages of production while also including comments from experts on natural history discussing the what scientist believe the world was like then. Most of the featurettes are recycled from the previous edition. Otherwise the commentary tracks, deleted scenes and just about everything else is imported from the previous two disc edition of the film. There’s also theater money that can be presented for “Ice Age 2″.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Ice Age! Click Here
If you purchased the previous two disc set of this movie, I’d take a pass on this one. There’s no improvement in this edition vs. the earlier two disc set in my mind.
Here’s why:
First, a great character driven story with a positive message. The heroes in this story don’t start out as heroes at all. Sid is an annoying and rather pathetic sloth who is left behind when all his friends migrate. Manfred is a mammoth with “issues” who at the beginning is walking the wrong way for some reason. Why? Does the scene with the moving cave drawings explain this? Was his wife and offspring killed, and was he walking the wrong way to end his own life? Diego the sabertooth tiger is an order following killer on a mission.
Each of these characters grow beyond themselves to save a human baby. Sid assumes responsiblity and develops courage. Diego learns to think for himself and do the right thing. Manfred overcomes his grief and self-centerdness and endures all kinds of trials to save a baby who may grow up to be a hunter of mammoths. This is a story how anyone, regardless of how non-heroic they may be, can rise above themselves and do what is right when they have to.
Second, this DVD lets you watch the movie five different ways: Widescreen, Fullscreen, “Nutty Movie” mode where you can watch the deleted scenes as if they’d been spliced back into the movie, commentary mode, and “extreme cool” mode where you watch the movie in a window while documentary material plays in another window. How cool is that?
Third, the deleted scenes are actually very interesting. They have their own commentary too. Sylvia is a great character (a sloth girlfriend of Sid’s) who was going to be in the movie but was cut out and replaced. The commentary tells why.
Fourth, the two shorts are great. Gone Nutty is more of Scrat chasing acorns, and Bunny is a brilliant short about an elderly female rabbit’s last minutes of this life and the transition to the next.
And there’s a lot more. It make take until the next ice age for me to get through all the stuff on this DVD!

Just the other night I caught “The Saint” on television, and I was rapt. Aside from the movies drag through Russia, and the ingenious race methods of Val Kilmer’s character, Simon Templar, a theif with sharp disguises and gadgets, it is the adore myth that has taken me. Elisabeth Shue’s character makes your heart ache: someone so pretty to be so alone and in search for the magic of care for. The chemistry between Kilmer and Shue is absolutely overwhelming, and it makes me wonder why I have read so many critic reviews on this movie that have shot it to the dirt? Why listen to critics anyway? What exactly do they inquire? This is a movie where you have to stare the beauty and the fun that it displays, and understand the purity and magnificence of good, intriguing admire. Critics can dog this movie all they want, where it’s action may not excite the “Armageddon” fans, and it’s suspense may not grip the “Yowl” fans, the excellence of this movie is left for those who can describe to it. In this world that lacks magic, is filled with disappointments, and murky, repeititive activities, this movie is the spice that anyone’s life can exercise. Yes, critics, shake your heads in disgust, unbiased know that The Saint’s esteem tale alone by far trascends the over-rated greatness of “Sizable” and other such movies that everyone went exasperated over. Think a movie by what it gives to you, not by what you ask of it. “The Saint” is definitly 1 of very few movies that will soon be entering my movie collection.
I really liked this film, and yes, I have seen the series with Roger Moore. I imprint that the reviews here so far seem to descend into two camps: people who never saw the series, and loved the film, and people who loved the series, and honest can’t salvage over their disappointment that their beloved character wasn’t faithfully portrayed on the expansive shroud.
No, Val Kilmer’s Simon Templar is not the same as Roger Moore’s. but this isn’t really such a abominable thing. The movie is a really nice, underrated glance thriller. It’s got action, romance, exotic locals, love-to-hate-em villains, a likeable hero, and a place that doesn’t strain suspension of disbelief too far. What more do you want in a popcorn movie?
I’ll admit, if you’re a staunch fan of the series or the books it might have been nice to have a movie that reflects the new a slight more faithfully. But it might be well to study that the series was not without its faults as well. For one thing, it always bothered my about the series that Simon Templar is an unadulterated superb guy, who never, ever does anything really criminal or substandard or sinister, yet everywhere he goes, the local authorities are watching him like hawks, as though he is some kind of arch criminal.
Buy,Download, Or Stream The Saint! Click Here
I’m also rather thrown for a loop that some of the reviewers here blast the movie for being amazing, and then decry Val Kilmer’s Simon Templar because he’s not like the “precise” Saint. Apt, this version is not all that faithful to the spirit of Leslie Charteris’ character, but that Saint was a freelance, adventuring do-gooder, a man who read the papers interested to collect a cause to involve himself in. His accurate code was strong, and his motives were also pure: he would never pain, bewitch from, or waste anyone who doesn’t completely deserve it. In short, the Saint was the Robin Hood of the twentieth century. Folks, let’s face it, this is not the most believable character in fiction. I grant you, it’s certainly fun, and it might have played well in the pulp era of the 1920s in which the character orignated (or even the early to mid 60s when the series was made), but the producers of the film probably felt (and perhaps not wrongly, let’s grant) that this sort of thing was fair too noteworthy for audiences to swallow in today’s more cynical era.
If you can earn over the fact that this is not really Leslie Charteris’ Saint, then you will come by this movie to be a really fun, animated peek thriller. I recommend it.

After reading the gushing, swooning review from the DVD critic in last Tuesday’s NY Times, I immediately ordered the “Special Collector’s Edition” of TO Gain A THIEF from Amazon. When it arrived, I compared it to my current Paramount “Widescreen Edition” from 2002. Well, the critic was right–there’s simply no comparison. This fresh version has a 2.0 Dolby Surround soundtrack (in addition to the unusual mono version) and a cleaned-up, enhanced, crystal-clear portray, open to accomplish. It looks like they took the drab, blurry, primitive extinct stock and actually washed it, removing years of dirt and grime and smoke and hair and whatever else was there, not to mention a computerized removal of virtually all scratches and glitches. The result is incredible.

Well, the two most gorgeous people who ever lived search for even more elegant. Wait till you eye the renowned fireworks scene now!
I don’t have to verbalize you that this film is fabulous, no matter which version you have. But I can guarantee you that this newly restored version makes it seem better than ever. If you’re as nuts about Hitchcock as I am, it really is worth the upgrade. Appreciate!

Update (11/8/2009) : The recent To Acquire a Thief – The Centennial Collection (1955) (2pc) is essentially the same as the 2007 “Special Collector’s Edition,” with the same upgraded print. This review applies to both editions.
This go brochure to adventure and romance is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most provocative films. The shapely vistas of the French Riviera are matched perfectly by the pleasing duo of Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Robert Burks’ cinematography was nominated for an Academy Award and Edith Head gives Grace Kelly the leer of an American princess. A exquisite screenplay from Michael Hayes based on a new by David Dodge, and a light romantic gain from Lyn Murray combine with all the other elements to perform this a fair film classic.
American John Robie (Cary Grant) has been living well in a sparkling villa on the French Riviera for the past 15 years. Once the most eminent thief in France, the man known as “The Cat” has been composed for many years. He was in prison during the war when the Germans bombed it. He chose to end and fight with the French Resistance upon his speed, and became a account. It led to his parole, which is rather precarious now that a string of jewel robberies mimicking his accurate style are occuring on the rooftops of the rich.
The French police want him for it, and his obsolete pals are indignant that he’s brought them this unwanted attention after all these years. Since the only device to determined himself is to salvage the thief himself, he hooks up with an insurance agent whose company is paying out the claims on all the robberies and begins a game of cat and mouse with the thief. The cheese in the trap is the toothsome Grace Kelly.
Francie Stevens (Kelly) and her mother, Jessie (Jesse Royce Landis), are vacationing on the Riviera. Robie, posing as a poke tycoon from Oregon, wants to maintain they and their diamonds company until the thief strikes. Francie throws off his game, however, when she learns early on who he really is and displays a wild enthusiasm for helping him rob! Robie isn’t there to pick, of course, but has pains convincing Francie of that when her mother’s jewels are stolen. Coming on the heels of a romantic interlude between the two, it is especially insulting.
That evening together is framed beautifully by Hitchcock, cutting serve and forth between the fireworks outside on the Riviera and the fireworks going on inside. Kelly is like a roguish kitten with a gleam in her behold, and Grant the older cat, who’s seen her kind of kitten before and isn’t clear he wants to play. There is a fantastic chemistry between the two, who seemed to be made for each other on the cover. A wild crawl in her sports car along the cruise that has Robie a minute shocked and a picnic in heavenly dress are a treat to scrutinize.
Complicating matters is another sexy kitten, Danielle Foussard (Brigitte Auber) . She is the daughter of one of his dilapidated pals (Jean Martinelli) and would like nothing better than to rush off with Robie to South America. But she is a different kind of kitten, perhaps harder to handle than Francie. When her father is murdered and pegged as the thief, she lashes out at Robie at his funeral. By this time, Francie’s wise mom has region her straight about Robie, and together they area a trap for the sincere thief at a posh costume ball.
It will lead to an gripping and gripping sprint on the rooftops as Robie unmasks the imposter. Since he’s enlisted Francie’s serve this time, he is forced to admit he may not be the lone wolf he concept he was. There is a terrific conclusion as everyone gets what they want, especially the viewer. Witness rapidly for Hitch on the attend seat of the bus Grant uses to evade the police! This is attractive escapist entertainment that you can’t abet but descend in esteem with. A obedient film to net lost in on any weekend.
